Let’s face it, we’ve all had the home improvement itch at some point. While some repairs do require the help of a professional (please do not attempt to rewire your whole property on your own), many maintenance issues can be handled on your own. Whether it’s a huge renovation or just a small DIY, our tips will help you turn your dwelling place into a better home (and help you save some coins).

1. Have a plan and do your research

Nike’s famous quote “just do it” doesn’t really work for renovations/maintenance. You need to make sure you have a clear idea of what it is you want to accomplish (and how much money and time it will take) before you start knocking walls down. When doing home renovations, the best thing you can do is over-budget and over-prepare. There are a lot of online tools you can use to help you plan your project as well as “how to” YouTube videos on any topic you can think of. Take advantage of them, they are free!

P.S. Always add a 10-20% buffer to your budget estimates to prepare for inevitable surprises.

2. Try to add value

If you don’t yet have a clear plan of what home improvement to start with, try prioritizing projects that can also increase your home’s value. Try to focus on what is considered valuable in the area you live in; current trends might not always be a safe bet. Increasing square footage is always a good idea so you can try to upgrade your basement or build an exterior deck. Revamping the kitchen/bathroom is another smart and easy way to increase your home’s value.

3. Quick ticks first

Certain projects are more urgent than others. If you have a home improvement idea that will save you money or prevent future damage, put it at the top of your priority list! Make sure that quick and easy fixes are also on the top of the list as these will save time and give you the boost you need to continue with bigger, more stressful projects.

P.S. Write it all down on a piece of paper. You will feel less stressed and won’t have to constantly worry about forgetting things. Bonus: crossing things off the list is extremely satisfying.

4. Get your tools right

You can’t really improve your home without the right tools. Before you start making irreversible changes to your home, make sure you have your toolbox ready with all the equipment you might need. Don’t know what tools are required for your project? Google is your best friend.

P.S. Don’t forget about the holy grail of construction: duct tape (never underestimate its power).
